2 Kashmiris martyred near LoC

Indian soldiers killed two fighters in occupied Kashmir along the Line of Control (LoC), the army said Friday. An "intense and heavy firefight" was triggered on Thursday night between soldiers and "infiltrating terrorists" near the de facto border known as the Line of Control (LoC), the Indian army's White Knight Corps said in a statement on social media. The overnight fighting led "to the neutralization of two terrorists", the statement said, referring to the suspected rebels. Weapons and "war-like stores" were recovered from the site, the army said, but it was not clear if the bodies of slain fighters were also retrieved. The incident could not be independently verified. India has a permanent deployment of more than half a million soldiers in the territory. from Latest World News, International News | Breaking World News https://ift.tt/0fgecoD via IFTTT

Trump set to launch Canada, Mexico tariffs on March 1

US President Donald Trump is expected to announce new tariffs on imports from Canada and Mexico, effective March 1. However, sources familiar with the matter say the tariff plan will include a process for the two countries to seek specific exemptions for certain goods. While deliberations are still fluid ahead of Trump's self-imposed February 1 deadline, the tariff rate is yet to be finalized. Trump has previously indicated that he intends to impose a 25% tariff on imports from both countries, with some exemptions likely for specific imports. According to an administration official, the tariff review continues, and while some exemptions could be considered, they will be "few and far between." The 28-day delay before implementation is seen as a more cautious approach, providing time for negotiations over measures to address issues such as illegal immigration and the flow of fentanyl opioids across the US border. These tariffs could significantly disrupt North American trad...

Costco to raise hourly wages to over $30 for US store workers

Retailer Costco Wholesale will increase pay for most of its hourly US store workers to more than $30, according to a memo sent to employees this week. The company will increase hourly pay for its top of the scale employees over the next three years, with the pay rising by $1 to $30.20 in the first year and an extra $1 each in the subsequent two years, according to the memo. The pay hike comes after Costco Teamsters union members said earlier this month that they voted in favor of a nationwide strike as they entered final round of talks to reach a new contract ahead of a Jan. 31 deadline. The union, which represents more than 18,000 workers at Costco, said at the time that 85% of its members voted to authorize a strike. The bottom of the scale employees will also get an increase of 50 cents to $20, according to the memo. "With these changes, we believe our hourly wages and benefits will continue to far outpace others in the retail industry," the company said in the memo signed...

Uganda confirms first Ebola death amid new outbreak

Uganda’s Ministry of Health has confirmed an outbreak of the Ebola virus in the capital, Kampala, following the death of a 32-year-old nurse. This marks the country’s first confirmed Ebola fatality since 2023. The victim, who died on January 29 at Mulago National Referral Hospital, had multi-organ failure. Post-mortem samples confirmed the Sudan Ebola virus strain, the Health Ministry said in a statement. Authorities are tracing at least 44 contacts, including 30 health workers, in an effort to contain the highly contagious virus. A vaccination drive for all identified contacts is set to begin immediately. Health officials reassured the public that the situation remains under control and urged Ugandans to report suspected cases. The outbreak comes as Tanzania recently declared a Marburg outbreak, a virus similar to Ebola. Rwanda, which shares a border with Uganda, has just emerged from its own Marburg outbreak. Containing the spread in Kampala, a city of over 4 million people, poses a ...

Trump blames pilot error, criticises FAA diversity efforts over DC plane crash

In the aftermath of a catastrophic collision between a regional jet and a US Army helicopter near Washington, DC, President Donald Trump, on Thursday, suggested that federal diversity efforts, which were implemented under Democratic administrations, may have contributed to the deadly crash that killed all 67 people on board. The incident, which occurred at Reagan Washington National Airport, involved an American Airlines Bombardier aircraft carrying 60 passengers and four crew members colliding with an Army Black Hawk helicopter. While the investigation into the crash is ongoing, the Republican President also indicated that pilot error on the helicopter may have played a role. He criticised the Obama and Biden administrations for what he described as a "left-wing diversity push" that, in his view, excluded competent employees from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). “I put safety first. Obama, Biden, and the Democrats put policy first,” Trump said during a press confer...

‘More will die’: Phil Williams criticized for ‘disgusting’ post on Potomac River midair collision

Phil Williams, chief investigative reporter for NewsChannel 5, faced criticism after posting on social media that President Donald Trump’s federal buyouts may have contributed to the deadly midair collision between an American Airlines flight and a military helicopter near Washington, D.C. on January 29.  The tragic crash, which occurred near Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport, has sparked debate about the potential safety risks linked to Trump’s recent federal hiring freeze. The crash involved American Eagle Flight 5342, a Bombardier CRJ700 regional jet traveling from Wichita, Kansas, to Washington, D.C., and a Sikorsky H-60 Black Hawk military helicopter on a training flight. Both aircraft collided and fell into the Potomac River, resulting in multiple fatalities. Authorities are still working on recovery efforts, though challenging weather conditions have made the operation complex. In the immediate aftermath of the crash, Williams posted on X (formerly Twitter), suggesti...

RFK Jr faces tough questions in confirmation hearing for health secretary role

Robert F. Kennedy Jr., nominated to be the next head of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), faced a contentious confirmation hearing on Wednesday, where he struggled to answer questions regarding the future of Medicaid and Medicare, vital government health programs used by millions of Americans. During the hearing, Republican Senator Bill Cassidy of Louisiana, a physician and key vote for Kennedy’s confirmation, pressed the nominee on how he plans to reform Medicaid, a multi-billion-dollar program that covers healthcare for approximately 80 million people, including low-income, elderly, and disabled Americans. Kennedy, who is vying for the leadership of the $1.7 trillion HHS department, was unable to provide clear proposals for Medicaid reform, stating, “I don’t have a broad proposal for dismantling the program.” He also inaccurately claimed that Medicaid is fully funded by the federal government, failing to mention that both state and federal taxpayers contribute t...

Reporter exposed for allegedly pre-writing negative headline about RFK Jr.’s confirmation hearing

Controversy erupted at Robert F. Kennedy Jr.'s Senate confirmation hearing on Wednesday after it was revealed that a reporter had allegedly pre-written a negative headline about the event before it even began.  The headline, “RFK Jr. faces grilling on ‘anti-vaccine’ comments and animal ‘mutilation’ at confirmation hearing,” was exposed by author Calley Means, who filmed the female reporter. The news outlet she represented remains unknown, but the incident has sparked widespread outrage. Kennedy, 71, son of the late Robert F. Kennedy and nephew of former President John F. Kennedy, appeared before the Senate committee to answer questions regarding his nomination as President Donald Trump's health secretary. The confirmation hearing was expected to be contentious, given his controversial views on vaccines and public health. 🚨CAUGHT RED HANDED: The Corrupt Corporate Media is pre-writing negative headlines ahead of RFK Jr.’s confirmation hearing. Senate vote on Tulsi Gabbard’s DNI confirmation reportedly to take place in SCIF

Concerns have emerged following reports suggesting that the U.S. Senate vote on whether to confirm Tulsi Gabbard as Director of National Intelligence (DNI) might take place behind closed doors in a Sensitive Compartmented Information Facility (SCIF), with vote tallies kept secret.  Conservative political activist Charlie Kirk was among those raising alarm over the potential lack of transparency in the confirmation process. Kirk posted on X (formerly Twitter), claiming that the vote might be conducted privately in a SCIF, a secure facility used for processing highly classified information. He argued that withholding vote tallies from the American public would be a violation of transparency, urging citizens to have the right to know how their elected Senators vote on key nominations, particularly those made by President Trump. This potential move toward secrecy has sparked concern among critics who fear it may undermine the integrity of the voting process. Gabbard, a former U.S. repr...

Russia claims capturing east Ukrainian town of Velyka Novosilka

Russia on Sunday said its forces had captured the east Ukrainian town of Velyka Novosilka in the embattled Donetsk region, almost three years into their offensive. Russia's military has been making steady advances on the battlefield in eastern Ukraine for months. Moscow's defence ministry said Russian troops led "active offensive actions" and "liberated the settlement of Velyka Novosilka", which lies in the west of the Donetsk region. Moscow regularly claims the capture of small villages, but rarely announces claims to bigger towns. According to Ukrainian data, Velyka Novosilka had a population of around 6,000 people before Moscow's 2022 offensive -- but only around 300 people remain. Velyka Novosilka is close to the southern front line in Ukraine -- which has remained largely static but where fears of a fresh Russian offensive have risen for weeks. Russia's defence ministry later released images of two soldiers waving Russian flags on top of a damag...

Belarus’ Lukashenko poised to extend 29-Year rule with landslide exit poll results

Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko is on course to secure a seventh term in office, with exit polls showing him receiving 87.6% of the vote in Sunday’s presidential election. The results, broadcast on state TV, suggest the longtime leader is extending his 29-year grip on power. This is the first presidential election in Belarus since the 2020 vote, which sparked mass protests over allegations of widespread fraud. Following the demonstrations, Lukashenko’s government cracked down on dissent, imprisoning more than 1,000 people, including Nobel Peace Prize laureate Ales Bialiatski. The vote comes as Belarus remains closely aligned with Russia, even allowing its territory to be used as a staging ground for Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022. Lukashenko defiant Speaking in Minsk after casting his ballot, Lukashenko described Belarus as a “tough democracy,” asserting that his government does not suppress dissent. “All our opponents and enemies should understand: we will never repeat...

Declassification of JFK, MLK, RFK files could shed new light on tragic killings

US President Donald Trump has announced an executive order to declassify the remaining government files on three of the most high-profile assassinations in US history: President John F Kennedy in 1963, Rev Martin Luther King Jr in 1968, and Senator Robert F Kennedy in 1968, according to CNN. This move, which fulfills a campaign promise, will allow the public access to long-held documents surrounding these infamous killings, though experts caution that it may not resolve all the unanswered questions or dispel the conspiracy theories that have persisted for decades. Trump, during the announcement, promised that “everything will be revealed,” as he signed the order with his characteristic Sharpie. However, some analysts believe the documents will add important details but likely fail to provide a “smoking gun” that could conclusively settle the mysteries. The process of releasing government files on the JFK assassination began in 1992 with the passing of the JFK Re...

CIA suggests lab leak likely source of Covid-19 outbreak

The CIA has released a new assessment on the origins of the Covid-19 pandemic, stating it is "more likely" that the virus leaked from a Chinese laboratory than emerged naturally from animals. However, the agency noted that this determination is made with "low confidence," indicating a lack of definitive and conclusive intelligence. The assessment, shared on Saturday, marks an early decision by the CIA's new director, John Ratcliffe, who was appointed by President Donald Trump earlier this week. Ratcliffe, who served as director of national intelligence during Trump’s first term, has been a proponent of the lab leak theory, which suggests the virus may have originated at the Wuhan Institute of Virology. The institute is located near the Huanan wet market, where the first cluster of infections was reported. A CIA spokesperson explained that the assessment was based on existing reports, suggesting a "research-related origin" is more likely than a natural ...

Hamas frees 4 Israeli soldiers in exchange for 200 Palestinians

Hamas and Israel carried out a hostage-prisoner swap on Saturday under a Gaza ceasefire deal, but a last-minute dispute blocked the expected return of hundreds of thousands of Palestinians to devastated northern Gaza. As part of the exchange, the second since the truce took effect last Sunday, four freed Israeli women hostages, all soldiers, arrived home in Israel after more than 15 months of captivity in Gaza. In exchange, Israel's prison service confirmed that 200 prisoners, whom it called "terrorists", were freed. The Israeli captives, Karina Ariev, Daniella Gilboa and Naama Levy, all aged 20, and Liri Albag, 19, waved, smiled, and gave thumbs up as they were paraded on a stage in Gaza City. Masked and armed fighters flanked them during a slick ceremony watched by hundreds of residents. In Tel Aviv, where a crowd gathered to watch their release on a large TV screen at a plaza known as Hostage Square, there were tears of joy, applause and a loud cheer as Israeli flags w...

Mysterious disease claims 17 lives in IIOJK

Authorities in the India-Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir were investigating a mysterious disease that has claimed the lives of 17 people, local media reports said Saturday. The deaths, including those of 13 children, have occurred in the remote village of Badhaal in Jammu's Rajouri area since early December. The village was declared a containment zone earlier this week with around 230 people quarantined, the Press Trust of India (PTI) news agency reported. All of the fatalities had damage to the brain and nervous system, Amarjeet Singh Bhatia, who heads Rajouri's government medical college, said. "The winter vacations have also been cancelled to deal with the medical alert situation," PTI quoted Bhatia as saying. The victims were members of three related families. The federal government has launched an investigation with health minister Jitendra Singh saying an initial probe suggested the deaths were "not due to any infection, virus or bacteria but rather a ...

United Airlines flight makes emergency return after technical failure

A United Airlines flight en route from Lagos, Nigeria, to Washington Dulles International Airport was forced to return mid-flight on Friday due to a technical issue, leaving six people hospitalized. The aircraft, Flight 613, experienced “unexpected aircraft movement,” prompting an emergency return. The incident resulted in four passengers and two crew members suffering serious injuries, while 27 passengers and five crew members sustained minor injuries. A total of 245 passengers and 11 crew members were aboard. Following the flight’s return to Lagos, the injured passengers were hospitalized but have since been discharged. Tracking data revealed significant drops in the aircraft's speed twice during the flight at 36,000 feet, with the speed decreasing sharply from over 500 knots to 40 knots before returning to normal. A third, smaller speed drop occurred shortly afterward, after which the flight reversed course and returned to Lagos. The flight, a Boeing 787-8, took off from Murtala...

Bangkok shuts over 350 schools amid worst air pollution in five years

Air pollution in the Thai capital forced more than 350 schools to close on Friday, city authorities said, the highest number in five years. Bangkok officials also announced free public transport for a week in a bid to reduce traffic in a city notorious for noxious exhaust fumes. Seasonal air pollution has long afflicted Thailand, like many countries in the region, but this week's hazy conditions have closed the most schools since 2020. "It's hard to breathe... I really feel the burn in my throat," drinks seller Benjawan Suknae, 61, told AFP. "I think (school closures) could help to a certain point." The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration said it had closed 352 schools across 31 districts due to air pollution. More than 250 schools in Bangkok were closed on Thursday, and officials urged people to work from home and restricted heavy vehicles in the city. Air pollution hits the Southeast Asian nation seasonally as colder, stagnant winter air combines with smok...

Denmark charges two in first case under Quran desecration law

Denmark charged two people on Friday under its law banning desecration of the Quran, a first for the legislation adopted after a series of holy book burnings that sparked outrage among Muslims, authorities said. The pair, whose identities were not disclosed, are accused of “inappropriate treatment of a Quran” during a festival in June gathering people from the political, economic and social spheres. Neither Copenhagen’s prosecution authority nor local media have described their alleged actions in detail. The actions “took place publicly, were followed by a number of people and were also broadcast to a wider circle by being filmed and broadcast live on Facebook”, prosecutor Lise-Lotte Nilas said in a statement. The new legislation was adopted on December 7, 2023 and entered into force several days later, after a series of desecrations of Islam’s holy book in Denmark and neighbouring Sweden sparked outrage in Muslim countries. In practical terms, it is now forbidden to burn, tear or othe...

Trump nominee John Ratcliffe confirmed as CIA director

A majority of the US Senate on Thursday backed President Donald Trump’s nominee John Ratcliffe, a former House of Representatives member who served as Director of National Intelligence during Trump’s first term, as director of the CIA. The Senate voted to confirm Ratcliffe by 74-25, as 20 Democrats and one independent joined Republicans in backing the nomination. The Republican-led Senate has been working to confirm Trump’s nominees for top positions in his administration as quickly as possible, starting with his national security team. Former Republican Senator Marco Rubio was confirmed on Monday, the day of Trump’s inauguration, and Senate leaders scheduled a procedural vote on Trump’s nomination of former Fox News personality Pete Hegseth to be secretary of defense for later on Thursday. Members of the Senate Intelligence Committee questioned Ratcliffe closely during his nomination hearing last week about whether he would fire or force out employees for their political views or ...

A British teenager, Axel Rudakubana, has been sentenced to at least 52 years in prison for the brutal killing of three young girls and the stabbing of 10 others at a Taylor Swift-themed dance event in Southport, England, last July. The attack, which shocked the nation, was described by Prime Minister Keir Starmer as one of the "most harrowing moments" in Britain’s history. Rudakubana, 18, pleaded guilty to the murders of six-year-old Bebe King, seven-year-old Elsie Dot Stancombe, and nine-year-old Alice Dasilva Aguiar, as well as the attempted murder of 10 other children. The court heard that the teenage assailant was obsessed with violence and genocide, and two of the victims sustained injuries that were deemed “sadistic in nature” by the prosecution. Saudi FM expresses optimism for Lebanon's future in first visit in 15 years

Saudi Arabia’s Foreign Minister, Prince Faisal bin Farhan, arrived in Beirut Thursday for his country’s first high-level visit to Lebanon in nearly 15 years, following a prolonged period of strained relations. The visit comes at a critical time for Lebanon, which is grappling with an ongoing economic crisis and the aftermath of the destructive 2006 Israel-Hezbollah war. During his visit, Prince Faisal expressed strong optimism about Lebanon’s new leadership and their potential to drive the necessary reforms to stabilize the nation and rebuild its shattered economy. “We are greatly confident in the ability of the president and the prime minister to initiate the reforms necessary to bolster Lebanon’s security, stability, and unity,” Prince Faisal said after meeting Lebanese President Joseph Aoun in Beirut. Lebanon’s parliament elected Aoun as president earlier this month, ending over two years of political deadlock. His candidacy was widely believed to have been backed by Riyadh and West...

Lauren Boebert invites pardoned January 6 rioters to Capitol for guided tour

Congresswoman Lauren Boebert has extended an invitation to individuals recently pardoned by former President Donald Trump for their involvement in the January 6 Capitol riot, offering them a guided tour of the Capitol Building.  Boebert made the announcement on Tuesday outside a Washington D.C. jail, where she claimed several of the pardoned rioters were still being held unjustly after Trump’s executive order on Inauguration Day. Boebert voiced strong support for Trump's decision to pardon nearly 1,500 individuals who participated in the 2021 Capitol attack. She pledged to be the first member of Congress to offer them a tour of the Capitol, despite the violent events of that day. The rioters, who stormed the Capitol following Trump’s claims of a "stolen" 2020 election, resulted in assaults on over 140 police officers and extensive damage to the historic building. While Boebert’s comments are expected to spark mixed reactions among her fellow lawmakers, many of whom feared...

Stabbing attack in Tel Aviv leaves four injured, assailant killed

Four people were injured in a stabbing attack late Tuesday in central Tel Aviv. The attacker, a Moroccan-born U.S. permanent resident, was shot and "neutralized" by a civilian passerby as he attempted to flee the scene. Israeli authorities identified the suspect, who had entered Israel three days before the attack, based on documents found on his body. Born in Morocco in June 1995, the assailant had held U.S. permanent residency since September 2022, a profile rarely seen in attacks targeting Israelis. Two of the victims sustained moderate injuries, while the other two were lightly wounded. All four were rushed to the hospital for treatment. This incident follows a similar stabbing attack on Saturday by a Palestinian assailant from the West Bank, who seriously injured an Israeli man in southern Tel Aviv before being shot dead. The attacks come amid heightened tensions following the launch of a major Israeli military operation in Jenin, which resulted in at least eight Palesti...

Israeli army chief resigns over Oct 7 security lapse

Israel's army chief, Herzi Halevi, announced his resignation on Tuesday, taking responsibility for the catastrophic security failure on October 7, 2023, when Hamas gunmen from Gaza launched a cross-border attack that killed 1,200 Israelis and took around 250 hostages. Halevi, who had been widely expected to step down after the deadliest day in Israeli history, said he would remain in office until March 6, 2025, completing the military’s internal investigations into the attack and bolstering the readiness of the Israel Defense Forces (IDF). The resignation came amid mounting criticism, but Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's government has resisted calls for a state inquiry into its role in the breach. In his resignation letter to Defence Minister Israel Katz, Halevi acknowledged the IDF's failure to protect Israeli citizens on that fateful day. "Israel paid heavily in human lives," he wrote, adding that the responsibility for the failure would weigh on him for the...

Global changes "A tide of change is sweeping the country. Sunlight is pouring over the entire world, and America has the chance to seize this opportunity like never before, but first, we must be honest about the challenges we face." Criticism of Biden “We now have a government that cannot manage even a simple crisis at home, while at the same time stumbling into a continuing catalog of catastrophic events abroad. It fails to protect our magnificent law-abiding American citizens but provides sanctuary and protection for dangerous criminals, many from prisons and mental institutions that have illegally entered our country from all over the world.” Reference to foreign wars "We have a go...

Gazans head destroyed homes

Thousands of displaced, war-weary Gazans set off across the devastated Palestinian territory to return to their home areas on Sunday, after a long-awaited truce between Israel and Hamas took effect following an initial delay. As part of ceasefire deal Hamas released three women Israeli hostages, Romi Gonen, Emily Damari and Doron Steinbrecher, from captivity to reunite with their families. A senior Hamas official later said that the next group of the hostages would be released on Saturday. The ceasefire began nearly three hours later than scheduled during which Israeli bombardments killed 19 people and wounded 25 others. But minutes after the truce began, the UN said, the first trucks, carrying humanitarian aid entered Gaza, where many residents were returning to nothing. Thousands of Gazans carrying tents, clothes and their personal belongings were seen heading back to their homes, after more than 15 months of war that displaced the vast majority of the population, in many cases more ...

During the delay, Israel’s military said it was continuing to operate, with the territory’s civil defence agency reporting 19 people killed and 25 wounded in bombardments. Minutes after the truce began, the United Nations said the first trucks carrying sorely needed humanitarian aid had entered the Palestinian territory, as displaced, war-weary Palestinians set off across the devastated Gaza Strip to return to their home areas. Thousands of people carrying tents, clothes and their personal belongings were ...

Oil tanker explosion in Northern Nigeria kills at least 60

At least 60 people were killed and scores of others injured when an oil tanker exploded in northern Nigeria on Saturday, senior officials said. Kumar Tsukwam, the commander of Niger State's Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), confirmed the incident in the Suleja Local Government Area, saying scores of others were injured while attempting to scoop fuel from a petrol tanker that had spilled on the road. “So far, 60 corpses have been recovered from the scene,” Tsukwam said in a statement. He, however, added that all FRSC personnel and other agencies are still on the scene carrying out rescue operations. In a separate statement, Abdullahi Baba-Arah, director general of the Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA), explained that the explosion occurred when one oil tanker collided with another tanker and later attempted to transfer the oil. Migrant detentions start next week, say Trump’s border czar

President-elect Donald Trump's incoming "border czar" Tom Homan said on Saturday that targeted operations to detain migrants who are in the US illegally will begin next week, and indicated they would involve several cities. Asked on Fox News if deportation raids would be launched in multiple cities, including Chicago, Homan said, "I wouldn’t categorize them as raids. There are going to be targeted enforcement operations." Asked how these operations would be received in so-called sanctuary cities, which have pledged not to use city resources for federal immigration raids, Homan suggested the incoming Trump administration would target city jails. "We want to arrest a bad guy in the safety and security of a county jail.” A source told Reuters on Friday that New York and Miami would be targeted. The Wall Street Journal reported earlier that Immigration and Customs Enforcement would stage a week-long operation in Chicago with potentially hundreds of agents. Homa...
