Human skin cells turned into fertilisable eggs

Scientists said Wednesday they have turned human skin cells into eggs and fertilised them with sperm in the lab for the first time — a breakthrough that is hoped to one day let infertile people have children. The technology is still years away from potentially becoming available to aspiring parents, the US-led team of scientists warned. But outside experts said the proof-of-concept research could eventually change the meaning of infertility, which affects one in six people worldwide. If successful, the technology called in-vitro gametogenesis (IVG) would allow older women or women who lack eggs for other reasons to genetically reproduce, Paula Amato, the co-author of a new study announcing the achievement, told AFP. "It also would allow same-sex couples to have a child genetically related to both partners," said Amato, a researcher at the Oregon Health & Science University in the United States. Scientists have been making significant advances in this field in recent years...

UK to migrants: Speak good English, pay taxes, and give back if you want to stay for good

Britain plans to tighten the rules over how migrants can settle permanently by making applicants prove their value to society, including being able to speak a "high standard" of English, interior minister Shabana Mahmood said on Monday. The plan is the latest government effort to dent the rising popularity of the populist Reform UK party, which has led the debate on tackling immigration and forced Prime Minister Keir Starmer's Labour Party to toughen its policies. Most migrants can currently apply for "indefinite leave to remain" after five years of living in Britain, a status that gives them the right to live permanently in the country. Read More: Starmer warns UK Labour in 'fight of our lives' In her first speech to the Labour Party conference as interior minister, Mahmood said the government is considering making changes so people will only qualify for this status if they pay social security contributions, have a clean criminal record, do not claim be...

How Trump’s claim on painkillers and autism sent Karachi mothers searching for answers

When the president of the United States stands on a podium and proclaims that Tylenol—locally known as Panadol—causes autism in children, parents listen. His statements unleashed a wave of fear, anxiety and anguish at least in Karachi, where we report from. An autism expert at Aga Khan University was “flooded” with calls and emails from anxious mothers over the weekend after Trump’s briefing. “Many mothers feel guilty, thinking their child’s autism might be linked to medications taken during pregnancy,” said Associate Professor Dr Sidra Kaleem, one of Pakistan’s few developmental paediatricians, and the director of the Child Development and Rehabilitation Centre at Aga Khan University Hospital. “It’s important to understand the difference between causation and association,” she stressed. Some studies have observed children developing autism after their mothers took Panadol during pregnancy, others did not. “This proves that taking Panadol does not guarantee a child will develop autism,...

Takeaways from Tianjin

The Shanghai Cooperation Organisation summit that concluded at the beginning of this month in Tianjin came at a time when the existing world order is undergoing profound shifts. As conflict spirals out of control in the Middle East, driven by Israel’s genocide in Gaza, and war in Ukraine shows no sign of ending, with China and Russia facing intensified competition from the United States, the gathering of SCO leaders in Tianjin was a statement of intent, emphasising stability, development, and multipolar cooperation. That intent was encapsulated in the Tianjin Declaration, signed by the heads of state to crystallise the organisation’s vision for the coming decade. Where previous declarations skewed towards rhetoric, this year’s document is comparatively pragmatic, laying out commitments to security coordination, economic connectivity, and reform of the international system. Multipolarity as principle One of the most consistent themes was the call for a multipolar world order. The declar...

The United Arab Emirates has introduced four new categories for visit visas and updated conditions for several existing permits, the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs, and Port Security, said Khaleej times reported on Monday. The decision is part of the country’s push to attract skilled professionals, entrepreneurs, and visitors, particularly in technology, artificial intelligence, entertainment, and tourism. The new categories include an entry visa for specialists in artificial intelligence, granted for single or multiple trips with a sponsor’s letter from a recognised technology institution, and an entertainment visa for foreigners visiting for short-term entertainment purposes. Netanyahu 'apologises' to Qatar's emir over Israeli attack on Doha

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, calling Qatar's prime minister from the White House on Monday, apologized for strikes against Hamas in the Gulf country and promised not to do so again, the United States said. Netanyahu, who had until now been defiant since ordering the strikes on September 9 in Qatar, placed the call as he was meeting with US President Donald Trump about a ceasefire in Gaza. "As a first step, Prime Minister Netanyahu expressed his deep regret that Israel's missile strike against Hamas targets in Qatar unintentionally killed a Qatari serviceman," a White House statement said. "He further expressed regret that, in targeting Hamas leadership during hostage negotiations, Israel violated Qatari sovereignty and affirmed that Israel will not conduct such an attack again in the future," it said. Israel did not immediately give an account of the call, although Netanyahu was expected later to hold a news conference with Trump. The White Hou...

Kabul announces release of US citizen

Afghanistan's Taliban government announced the release of a detained American citizen on Sunday, a week after an elderly British couple were also released by the authorities. In a statement the ministry identified the detainee as Amir Amiri and said he had been handed over to Adam Boehler, Washington's special envoy on hostages. Boehler made a rare visit to Kabul earlier this month to discuss the possibility of a prisoner exchange with the Taliban government. "The Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan released an American citizen named Amir Amiri from prison today," the Foreign Ministry on X, using the official name for government. "The Afghan government does not view the issues of citizens from a political angle and makes it clear that ways can be found to resolve issues through diplomacy." from Latest World News, International News | Breaking World News https://ift.tt/ODqyZtx via IFTTT

Massive Russian missile and drone barrage kills four in Kyiv

Russia pounded Ukraine for hours with hundreds of drones and missiles overnight, killing at least four people, including a 12-year-old girl, Kyiv said Sunday. Neighbouring Poland scrambled jets to secure its airspace in the wake of the 12-hour barrage, after NATO accused Moscow of being behind a series of violations of the defence alliance's airspace. Diplomatic efforts to stop the war have faltered and Russia has vowed to press on with the offensive that it launched in February 2022. "Moscow wants to continue fighting and killing and deserves only the harshest pressure from the world," Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said following the strikes, which lasted for 12 hours. "The Kremlin benefits from continuing this war and terror as long as there are profits from energy sales," he added, urging stronger measures against Russia. Following the massive aerial barrage, Zelensky held a round of calls with allies, including NATO chief Mark Rutte, Finnish Preside...

Michigan church shooting leaves at least 1 dead, 9 injured, police say

A man drove his vehicle through the front doors of a Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and shot at least 10 people, killing one of them, local police said on Sunday. The shooter got out of his vehicle firing an assault-style weapon, Grand Blanc Chief of Police William Renye said. He added that hundreds of people were in the church, which was set on fire when the vehicle smashed into it. Smoke billowed from the building as firefighters sprayed the blaze with water while fire trucks and emergency vehicles were parked nearby, footage on social media showed. Authorities believe they will find additional victims in the ruins, the chief said. Police did not immediately release the name of the suspect, who died at the scene in an exchange of gunfire with two officers who rushed to the church, the chief said. Renye described him as a 40-year-old man from Burton, Michigan. Further details were not immediately available. “My heart is breaking for the Grand Blanc community," Michig...

Trump says 'we will get it done' in the Middle East

US President Donald Trump expressed optimism on Sunday about reaching a deal to end the war in Gaza, saying there is “a real chance for greatness in the Middle East,” ahead of talks on Monday with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Trump did not provide specific details of a prospective ceasefire-for-hostages agreement in Gaza, but Vice President JD Vance told “Fox News Sunday” that top US officials are immersed in "very complicated" negotiations with Israeli and Arab leaders. "We have a real chance for Greatness in the Middle East. All are on board for something special, first time ever. We will get it done," Trump said in a Truth Social post that was issued as he rode in his motorcade to his suburban Virginia golf club. Two women die trying to cross Channel

Two women, both Somalis, died Saturday while trying to cross the Channel to Britain, French authorities said, adding that the body of another migrant had been found in a canal. Some 60 other migrants were rescued in the incident in which the two women died, when around 100 people got on to a makeshift boat south of the beaches of Neufchatel-Hardelot at around 3:15 am (0115 GMT) in a bid to get to the UK. Their overloaded boat returned to shore an hour later, after its motor failed to start, the local prefecture said in a statement. Civil protection workers took in 60 people for care, while others who had been on the boat ran away when rescuers turned up, said Isabelle Fradin-Thirode, an official in nearby Montreuil-sur-Mer. A couple and their child suffering from moderate hypothermia were rushed to a hospital in Boulogne, she said. The body — that of a man in his late 20s or early 30s — was recovered from a canal in the town of Gravelines, next to Dunkirk, said the prefecture ...

Iran nuclear talks fail to produce breakthrough

Sweeping UN sanctions loomed for Iran late Saturday for the first time in a decade, after last-ditch nuclear talks with Western powers failed to produce a breakthrough. President Masoud Pezeshkian said the United States had offered Iran only a short reprieve in return for handing over its whole stockpile of enriched uranium, an offer he described as unacceptable. An 11th-hour effort by Iran allies Russia and China to postpone the sanctions until April failed to win enough votes on the Security Council on Friday, meaning they will go into effect at midnight GMT on Saturday. In an address to the UN General Assembly on Saturday, Russia's top diplomat Sergei Lavrov accused Western governments of sabotaging diplomacy on Iran. Their rejection of the Russian-Chinese bid to delay the sanctions "finally exposed the West's policy of sabotaging the pursuit of constructive solutions in the UN Security Council, as well as its desire to extract unilateral concessions from Tehran through...

At least 36 dead, over 50 injured in stampede at actor Vijay's rally

At least 36 people were killed and more than 50 injured on Saturday in a stampede at a rally held by Tamil actor Vijay, who is campaigning for election, the chief minister of Tamil Nadu said. Chief Minister MK Stalin said eight children and 16 women were among the 36 people who died in the district of Karur in Tamil Nadu during a political rally by Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam, Vijay's party. Earlier, state lawmaker Senthil Balaji told reporters that 58 people were hospitalised. China warns against 'Cold War mentality'

Chinese Premier Li Qiang warned Friday against a return to a "Cold War mentality" and defended multilateralism and free trade, in a veiled criticism of the United States from the United Nations. The Chinese premier made no explicit reference to US President Donald Trump as he addressed the UN General Assembly. But he cast the Asian power as a defender of the global order, of which Washington until recently was the chief custodian. "The world has entered a new period of turbulence and transformation," Li said. "Unilateralism and (the) Cold War mentality are resurfacing. The international rules and order built over the past 80 years are under serious challenge and the once effective international system is constantly disrupted," he said, adding that humanity had "once again come to a crossroads." Li criticized the imposition of tariffs, which Trump has seized on as a key tool to pressure countries, even though he has reached a truce with China. ...

Indian official linked to murder plot, assassination plans in Nepal or Pakistan, US court alleges

A murder-for-hire plot involving an Indian government official allegedly included plans to assassinate an individual in Nepal or Pakistan, according to newly filed court documents in New York, reported Bloomberg. The US Department of Justice had previously accused Nikhil Gupta, an Indian national, of attempting to assassinate a US-based Sikh activist, Gurpatwant Singh Pannun, in New York. The plot was reportedly orchestrated by Vikash Yadav, an officer in India’s external intelligence agency, RAW. Gupta was arrested in the Czech Republic in June 2023 and extradited to the US, while Yadav remains in India. In federal court documents filed this week, US prosecutors linked Gupta and Yadav to the killing of Hardeep Singh Nijjar, a Sikh activist murdered in Canada in 2023. Both Nijjar and Pannun were vocal critics of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and had been labelled as terrorists by the Indian government. The new allegations suggest that the murder-for-hire plot extended beyond New ...

Iran, Russia ink $25b nuclear power deal ahead of looming UN sanctions

Iran and Russia signed a $25 billion deal to build nuclear power plants in the Islamic republic, Iranian state media reported Friday, just hours ahead of the likely return of sweeping UN sanctions on Iran. "A deal for the construction of four nuclear power plants with a value of $25 billion in Sirik, Hormozgan was signed between the Iran Hormoz company and Rosatom," state television said. Iran has just one operational nuclear power plant in Bushehr in the south, with a capacity of 1,000 megawatts -- just a fraction of the country's energy needs. Read More: Iran's president hails Pak-KSA defence pact According to state news agency IRNA, each plant will have a capacity of 1,255 megawatts, though no details were provided on the timeline. Tropical Storm Humberto becomes a hurricane, NHC says

Tropical Storm Humberto has strengthened into a hurricane over the Atlantic and is forecast to intensify further, with the US National Hurricane Center expecting it to become a major hurricane this weekend, the agency said on Friday. Hurricane Humberto is about 465 miles (750 km) northeast of the northern leeward islands packing maximum sustained winds of 75 mph (120 km/h), the NHC added in its latest advisory. According to USA Today, while Hurricane Humberto continues to strengthen over the Atlantic and is forecast to become a major hurricane with wind speeds of 130 mph, it is not the storm posing the greatest threat to the US. The system that Americans need to watch most closely is not yet named, but is expected to develop into Tropical Storm Imelda in the coming days. Although Humberto is forecast to remain out at sea, it could still influence Imelda’s path through a meteorological process known as the Fujiwhara effect. “How the storms interact with one another and with other weathe...

Sarkozy prepares for five-year prison term

A court on Thursday sentenced former French president Nicolas Sarkozy to five years in prison over a scheme for the late Libyan dictator Moamer Kadhafi to fund his 2007 presidential run, a verdict that will make the rightwinger the first French postwar leader to serve jail time. The Paris criminal court convicted Sarkozy, 70 and president from 2007-2012, on charges of criminal conspiracy, although it acquitted him of corruption and personally accepting illegal campaign financing. The court ordered that Sarkozy should be placed in custody at a later date, with prosecutors to inform the former head of state on October 13 when he should go to prison. He was also fined 100,000 euros ($117,000) and banned from holding public office. He has been convicted already in two separate trials but always avoided jail, in one case serving his graft sentence with an electronic tag, which has since been removed. Sarkozy, who was present in court for the verdict accompanied by his model and musician wif...

Taliban bans women from being treated by male dentists in Kandahar

The Taliban has barred women in Afghanistan’s Kandahar province from receiving treatment from male dentists, according to local media reports. Al Arabiya, citing Afghan outlets, said Taliban members ordered clinics not to allow female patients to be treated by male practitioners and removed women from facilities. The move comes weeks after the group outlawed what it called “bold” poetry, adding to a long list of restrictions imposed on women since the Taliban retook power in August 2021 following the US withdrawal. Abbas vows to work with Trump, UN and allies on Gaza peace plan

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas pledged at the United Nations on Thursday to work with US President Donald Trump, Saudi Arabia, France and the UN on a peace plan for Gaza overwhelmingly backed by the world body. The 193-member General Assembly earlier this month endorsed a seven-page declaration that seeks to advance a two-state solution and end the Gaza war between Israel and Hamas. The declaration followed an international conference at the UN in July hosted by Saudi Arabia and France. The United States and Israel boycotted the event and rejected the effort. Separately, US special envoy Steve Witkoff said Trump had presented a 21-point peace plan for the Middle East and Gaza during a meeting with leaders of Muslim-majority states on the sidelines of this week’s UN General Assembly. Five killed in autonomy protests in disputed Ladakh

Five people were killed in India on Wednesday as police clashed with hundreds of protesters demanding greater autonomy in the disputed territory of Ladakh, leaving "dozens" injured, police said. In the main city of Leh, demonstrators torched a police vehicle and the offices of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Bharatiya Janata Party, while officers fired tear gas and used batons to disperse crowds, police said. "Five deaths were reported after the protests," a police officer in Leh told AFP, on condition of anonymity as he was not authorised to speak to journalists. "The number of injured is in the dozens." Another police officer, Regzin Sangdup, told AFP that "several people, including some policemen, were injured." Authorities later imposed restrictions on gatherings, banning assemblies of more than four people. The sparsely populated, high-altitude desert region, home to some 300,000 people, borders both China and Pakistan. Around half of Lad...

At least 20 injured in Yemen’s drone strike on Israel

At least 20 people were injured on Wednesday after a drone launched from Yemen hit a hotel in Israel's Red Sea resort city of Eilat on the border with Jordan and Egypt, the Israeli national ambulance service Magen David Adom said. It said two people were seriously injured while others sustained medium to light injuries. The Israeli military said a drone launched from Yemen fell in Eilat, adding only that interception attempts were made. It later said that the attack targeted a hotel in the city. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu told the mayor of Eilat that he discussed with the Israeli military command ways to improve response to aerial threats on the city. The newspaper Israel Hayom, citing an initial investigation, said that air defence systems failed to intercept the drone. Israel Katz (@Israel_katz) Sept...

Iran, E3 in high-stakes talks over return of UN sanctions

Iran and European powers have agreed to continue talks about Tehran's disputed nuclear programme, Iranian foreign ministry said on Tuesday, after a meeting to try to strike a last-ditch deal to avert the reimposition of UN sanctions. The foreign ministers of France, Britain and Germany — the so-called E3 — along with the EU's foreign policy chief held talks with their Iranian counterpart on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly. "In light of the unjustified and illegal move to begin reinstating the U.N. Security Council's sanctions, some ideas and proposals for continuing diplomacy were raised during the meeting, and it was agreed that consultations will continue," Iran's foreign ministry said in a statement. After the meeting, a French diplomatic source said the discussion will continue to "explore all possibilities to the fullest", adding that Iran has yet to meet the conditions set by the E3 to avert the revival of UN sanctions. EU warned over India’s authoritarian drift

As the European Union moves to court New Delhi with its “New Strategic EU–India Agenda”, Human Rights Watch has raised the alarm again, reminding Brussels not to hand Prime Minister Narendra Modi a free pass on India’s ‘authoritarian drift’. The advocacy group warns that behind the language of partnership lies a government that has systematically eroded democratic norms. Across the entire 19-page document, human rights are mentioned only three times — each in the vaguest, most diplomatic manner, and never in relation to India’s deteriorating domestic landscape. The EU hints at “shared values” and multilateral cooperation, but ignores the uncomfortable truth of minority persecution, civic repression and the everyday silencing of critical voices. In its commentary, issued as President Ursula von der Leyen presses her pivot to New Delhi, Human Rights Watch (HRW) calls out Brussels for its eagerness to crown the country a “like-minded and trusted partner,” while airbrushing its mounting ri...

Macron says Trump must stop Gaza war if he wants Nobel Peace Prize

If US President Donald Trump really wants to win the Nobel Peace Prize, he needs to stop the war in Gaza, French President Emmanuel Macron said on Tuesday. Speaking to France's BFM TV from New York, Macron said that only Trump has the power to put pressure on Israel to end the war. "There is one person who can do something about it, and that is the US president. And the reason he can do more than us, is because we do not supply weapons that allow the war in Gaza to be waged. We do not supply equipment that allows war to be waged in Gaza. The United States of America does," Macron said. Typhoon Ragasa floods Taiwan’s Hualien, leaving two dead, 30 missing

Taiwan's fire department said on Tuesday that 30 people were missing and two people had died in the eastern county of Hualien, where a barrier lake in the mountains burst its banks in a typhoon. Taiwan has since Monday been lashed by the outer rim of Super Typhoon Ragasa, which is now on its way to the southern Chinese coast. The barrier lake, formed by landslides triggered by earlier heavy rain in the sparsely populated east of Taiwan, burst its banks mid-afternoon on Tuesday, sending a wall of water into Guangfu township. The fire department put the number of missing in Hualien following the flood at 30, with two deaths reported in Guangfu. India, US agree on sustained engagement

Indian Foreign Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar said he and US Secretary of State Marco Rubio agreed at a meeting in New York on Monday on the importance of sustained engagement to make progress in priority areas. The meeting on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly came after US President Donald Trump's move to impose a $100,000 fee for new H-1B visas, the latest blow to US-India ties, which the two sides have sought to develop given shared concerns about China. Posting on X, Jaishankar said he and Rubio discussed bilateral and international issues of concern and added they "Agreed on the importance of sustained engagement to progress on priority areas". Monday's was the first meeting between Rubio and Jaishankar since Trump imposed extra tariffs on India over its purchases of Russian oil. Ecuador prison riot leaves 14 dead, 14 injured in gang clash

A prison riot caused by gang fighting in southern Ecuador on Monday left 14 people dead and another 14 wounded, according to a local police chief. Prisoners in the port town of Machala, south of Guayaquil, faced off with authorities, killing a guard and kidnapping officers, police chief William Calle told TV network Ecuavisa. “From the inside they were shooting, throwing bombs, grenades,” Calle said. Some prisoners escaped, and 13 have been recaptured so far, he added. After about 40 minutes, authorities were able to retake control of the prison, according to Calle. Ecuador has been plagued by prison riots in recent years, with hundreds of inmates killed. The government of President Daniel Noboa, who has vowed to crack down on crime, attributes the clashes to gangs vying for territory and control. from Latest World News, International News | Breaking World News https://ift.tt/MnD6VjO via IFTTT

Major US allies break ranks on Palestine

In a moment described by Palestinian leaders as a "watershed", Britain, Canada, Australia and Portugal on Sunday recognised the Palestinian state, breaking with decades of Western policy and sparking fury in Israel, which vowed to resist any such outcome. France and other nations are expected to make similar declarations as the UN General Assembly opens in New York on Monday. The coordinated announcements mark the first time members of the Group of Seven advanced economies have formally backed Palestinian statehood, a move that places them at odds with the United States and Israel. UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer framed Britain's decision as an effort "to revive the hope of peace for the Palestinians and Israelis, and a two-state solution". He stressed recognition was not a "reward" for Hamas, branding the group a "brutal terror organisation", while also renewing calls for a ceasefire and for hostages still held in Gaza to be released. Riyadh expects Delhi to understand kingdom's security needs

Pakistan's nuclear umbrella will cover Saudi Arabia, a source close to the kingdom's government told AFP on Sunday, days after the two allies signed a surprise mutual defence treaty. The source told AFP that the deal had been in the works for years and that Saudi Arabia expected Pakistan's arch-rival India to understand the kingdom's security needs. When asked if the deal meant Pakistan's nuclear weapons could be used to defend Saudi Arabia, Ali Shihabi, an analyst close to the royal court, told AFP: "Yes, it does". "Nuclear is integral to this deal and Pakistan remembers that the kingdom effectively financed their nuclear programme and supported them when they were sanctioned," he added. "India will understand the security needs of Saudi Arabia. Saudi maintains excellent ties with India." Pakistan's Defence Minister Khawaja Asif reportedly also told a local broadcaster that the country's nuclear programme would be made availabl...

Trump to lead tributes at memorial for conservative leader Kirk

US President Donald Trump will lead tributes to Charlie Kirk on Sunday at a huge stadium gathering to honor the young right-wing influencer slain in the country's latest spasm of political violence. The service has drawn an extraordinary level of attention and security, with some US media likening it to a state funeral. The highest echelons of the Trump administration and orbit, topped by the president himself, waited their turn to address the crowd as the memorial ceremony got underway in the early afternoon. As he left the White House to fly out west and pay his respects, Trump said the service aimed "to celebrate the life of a great man." Thousands of people had lined up in the pre-dawn dark, hoping to get into the 63,000-seat American football stadium hosting the service and honor the young Republican star -- a close ally of the president whose voter outreach is credited with helping Trump get reelected last year. "I look at him as a Christ martyr, definitely,...

Pentagon imposes new curbs on media

The Pentagon has unveiled new restrictions on media covering the US military, requiring them to pledge not to disclose anything not formally authorized for publication and limiting their movements within the Department of War. The new guidelines, laid out in a lengthy memo distributed to reporters on Friday, require them to sign an affidavit promising to comply — or risk losing their media credentials. The move is the latest by the administration of President Donald Trump to control media coverage of his policies, and after he suggested that negative stories could be "illegal." The Pentagon "remains committed to transparency to promote accountability and public trust," the memo says. from Latest World News, International News | Breaking World News https://ift.tt/n4bS1JW via IFTTT

Zelensky plans new Trump meeting amid Russia attacks

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said Saturday he would meet US counterpart Donald Trump on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly next week as Russia intensified deadly strikes across his country. Russia carried out one of its largest aerial attacks, firing 40 missiles and some 580 drones at Ukraine in a nightime barrage that killed at least three people and wounded dozens, Zelensky said. A Ukrainian strike killed four people in Russia's southwestern Samara region, the local governor said, in one of the deadliest Ukrainian strikes since Russia launched its invasion in 2022. Zelensky said he would discuss security guarantees for Ukraine and sanctions on Russia during the talks with Trump in New York. Ukraine has insisted on Western-backed security guarantees to prevent future Russian attacks. Russian President Vladimir Putin has however warned that any Western troops in Ukraine would be unacceptable and legitimate targets. A US-led push for a quick end to the war has stalle...

NYC readies for record Climate Week

When Climate Week kicks off on Sunday in New York City, it will mark the event's biggest year yet — with organisers reporting a record number of companies participating and more events than ever to attend. Almost no one had expected this response in a year that has seen the event's host country — and the world's wealthiest — set to a climate-denying agenda of boosting fossil fuels, rolling back pollution regulation and defunding US science and climate action. Organisers of Climate Week even wondered, "Would people show up?" said Climate Group Chief Executive Officer Helen Clarkson. "Actually, there's huge enthusiasm for it," Clarkson said. Held alongside the UN General Assembly since 2009, this year's Climate Week showcases more than 1,000 events — including presentations, panel discussions and swanky cocktail parties — hosted by environmental nonprofits, companies and philanthropists hoping to generate deals and discussion around protecting the ...

Trump to welcome Erdogan

US President Donald Trump said Friday he will welcome Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan to the White House next week and expects a resolution to a long-running rift on fighter jets. It will be the first bilateral visit to the White House by Erdogan since 2019 during Trump's first term, with former president Joe Biden having a tense relationship with the Turkish leader he accused of autocratic behavior. Trump has shown a fondness for Erdogan despite misgivings from close US ally Israel, which is at odds with Turkey over Syria and Gaza. Trump announced that Erdogan will visit the White House on Thursday, after the two leaders participate in the UN General Assembly in New York. During Trump's first term, the United States booted Turkey, a NATO ally, out of its flagship F-35 fighter jet program. The first Trump administration took the action after Turkey defiantly bought Russia's S-400 surface-to-air missile defense system, raising fears that NATO's main adversary woul...
